What is trucker insurance?
The trucker insurance is an insurance bundle, which includes travel coverage, accidental death & dismemberment, disability, soft tissue, and illness cover in one bundle. Some companies offer extra add-ones and benefits in the individual and group plans.
Let’s see each component.
1. Travel Insurance (Emergency Medical Coverage).
This is 5 Million coverage available for medical treatment outside of your home province or Canada. In other words, it is out of province insurance for truck drivers, for medical treatment in the other province, where your health card or service card won’t pay for the medical treatment. This is multi-trip travel insurance.
A trucker should buy multi-trip travel insurance, instead of single trip coverage, which is good for occasional travelers. As a trucker, you might need to go across the border every day, every week, or every month, so the constraints on the number of trips will not work in the way they need.
Please note read your single trip travel insurance exclusions, it is for leisure travel, not for trucking.
2. Accidental Death and Dismemberment (ad & d).
This bundle includes coverage for deaths caused by accidents. Truckers spend most of their time on the road, which is why life insurance is important. A vital part of ad & d is dismemberment coverage, which protects against loss of limbs. With loss of a limb, it pays a lump sum benefit for losing one or more limbs. As we know, there is no natural replacement for human limbs, and we need income to maintain our lives.
We have $50,000 onward plans available, as per your budget and needs.
3. Disability coverage in trucker insurance
As most of the job time, truckers stay on the road, the risk of an accident is relatively high, which is why disability insurance is a necessary component. There are a few other things to keep in mind when choosing the disability coverage, e.g.
Waiting Period – It is the time to start receiving the payments after an injury, such as immediately, 30 days, or 112 days after the injury. The longer the waiting period, the cheaper the insurance.
Benefit Period – The time one will continue to receive disability benefits; it can be up to 2 years, 5 years, or up to the age of 70 years. Please note that the plans with short benefit periods are cheaper.
Benefit Amount – After a disability, the amount you receive on a monthly basis is called the benefit amount. The plans with a higher benefit amount are comparatively more expensive, so choose according to your budget and needs. You should keep in mind that most benefit amounts are determined by net income, not gross income.
4. Soft tissue cover in trucker insurance package
The soft tissue is a kind of disability because of muscle pull, or pain, not injury. So never forget this add on, a driver may not work because of muscle pull. This coverage is really crucial for intermodal drivers, flatbed drivers, because tarping, chaining and belts can cause jerks and strains.
5. Accidental Medical Treatment Benefit.
Another important component of the bundle, let’s say one got injured and on a disability claim. The disability benefit is a replacement income, but who is going to pay for the specialist treatment such as chiropractor, message, therapist, because they do not cover these in provincial health plans? The accidental medical benefit is a $10,000 benefit for the treatment after the disability.
SOME ADD-ONS AVAILABLE IN THE PACKAGE ARE-
Illness Cover – In trucking, especially long haul drivers, are prone to illnesses, because of cab shivering and plastic interiors. The illness coverage is not pinching, it is worth it to save your enterprise.
Total Disability – A lump sum paying plans are also available. It can be a top up in the package, one time paid out and offered by most disability insurance companies.
Even more addons such as lifestyle protection enhancer, health and dental benefit plans, and family coverage plans are also available in the market.
The coverage is available to local truckers, out-of-province truckers, and cross-border truckers.

Why is Medical Insurance for Truckers Required?
First, Canada’s provincial health plans do not cover medical care outside of the provinces or provide a limited out-of-province coverage. But as truckers, most of us drive across Canada or to the United States.
Second, when involved in an accident outside of your province of residence, particularly outside of Ontario, you might need to pay the hospital bills out of your own pocket, and this is not only limited to hospital expenses; your family may face financial hardship because of the loss of income.
Third, trucking is a hard job, prone to hazardous situations, because of being on the road, exposure to inclement weather, and working longer hours. That is why you need a coverage to support your life and family, since expenses, mortgages, and bills continue even after you cannot work.
